The "Yellow Peril", an ex-GPO telephones JU-250 van owned by Doug Florence had proved a faithful (if not always very reliable) form of club transport for some time before its trip to Austria in 1978. It had a new short engine just for the trip, as well as a new and astoundingly comfy rear bench seat welded in the day before departure. This didn't stop the alternator dying at Tunbridge Wells, but after that it performed heroically. Occasional use was made of a standard JU-250 exhaust repair kit, but driver and passengers were usually happy enough to consume the beans or rice pudding from this in order to effect the repair.... As the photo shows, such tins were just part of over 350 Kg of food which we took out on the 1978 expedition.
