The massive, usually snow-choked entrance of 1623/189, looking north
during a surface survey in 1996. Note that the surface survey line does not
need to take a physically traversable route ! The normal way past this hole
on the way to the middle plateau is a climb up and traverse to its right.
The joint forming the left wall in this picture is the same one on which
164 is formed. Beyond 189 and to the left is
171, whilst along a fault scarp to the right
lie 190 and B8 (197).
